Abstract:

The paper analyses the cases in which masculine nouns are used in order to refer to women on the syntax level of language. The major focus is put on the incorrect usage of a masculine noun and another part of a sentence when there is grammatical relation between them. The popularity of linguistic masculinization, widely used in the media discourse, is considered to be the main reason for the mistakes observed in the given examples. The analysed examples have been excerpted from articles published on the most visited news websites in Bulgaria according to Alexa.com. The paper concludes that the media language has the ability not only to impose prestigious speech models but also to give a notion of the contemporary state of language.
