Abstract:

The emoji code consists of pictographic units, carrying meaning. For their taxonomy the author proposes a distinction on the basis of their functionality. This system of classification divides emoji into two groups: denotative and emotive. Denotative emoji can designate objects from the material world or abstract concepts like love or anger. Emotive emoji, which originate from emoticons, can express the emotion a reader feels towards a certain object or event. Some emotive emoji can be used as denotative but the same does not apply for denotative emoji, which cannot act as emotive. Having based his thoughts on the neuroplasticity theory, the author suggests that the extensive use of emoji has an effect on the way we read and think.
