Abstract:
The paper presents a short introduction to the world of Simon Simon Carmiggelt (1913–1987), a Dutch author of feuilletons. A short summary of the characteristics of the feuilletons as a genre is provided. The genre of the short columns called “kronkels” is discussed. The paper presents a short biography of the author – his early childhood and student’s life, his journey to journalism, the important role he had for the development of the newspaper Het Parool (a tribune for the Dutch opposition). Simon Carmiggelt’s humour is discussed – melancholic, sometimes somber. The paper focuses on the main topics of his works – stories with biographical elements, stories about the stereotypes of Dutchman; stories about love, feuilletons about the Hague and Amsterdam, and feuilletons about the war. It also notes the influence of the cooperation of Simon Carmiggelt with Willem Elschot, Renate Rubinstein and Jeanne Roos.
