Abstract:

The article deals with the complex identity problems in Max Frisch’s late novel Montauk. It is based on the thesis that the various social masks that people wear in public are represented metaphorically by the protagonists’ shoes. The state of barefootedness therefore takes on a new meaning: the barefooted person is someone who shows his true identity without worrying about the consequences. Barefootedness is presented in Montauk as an aspired ideal, since it implies a return to the original, true self and embodies the philosophy of life of authenticity.
