Abstract:

The article aims to explore open-ended test items and the need for their implementation in literature education in secondary school. To answer the question, we rely on literacy and functional literacy as key concepts in modern education. The study emphasizes the usefulness of these test items because they are a good means for short and reasonable expression of inferences about fictional texts. In addition, it is recommended to combine open-ended items with writing interpretative compositions/essays. The alternative view considers such test items useless in literature education because they make it impossible to assess all complex skills for the reception of fictional texts.
