Abstract:
The main topic of our study is the argument structure of state predicates with an experiencer subject. Based on the existing descriptions of state predicates, the main semantic subtypes of experiencer predicates are identified: predicates for sensory perception, for emotional or mental state, and for volition. The syntactic realization of these predicates is considered in detail in cases where the second argument is a direct object or a complement clause. The analyses confirm our hypothesis that the semantics of the predicate determines the differences in the syntactic realization of the second argument – as a referential or generic nominal phrase or as a complement clause.
