Abstract:
The present work aims to explore the evolution of Christianity in Romania in the first centuries of our era, considering the contributions made by recent historical, archaeological and epigraphic research. The subject is particularly relevant since Christianity played a major role in the formation process of the Romanian people and contributed to its ethnic and cultural definition. This scientific approach will examine the archaeological discoveries, especially the Paleo-Christian basilicas and the inscriptions that provide conclusive evidence of the presence and organization of Christian communities on the current territory of Romania. In addition, we will refer to literary sources, including the Act of Martyrdom of Saint Sava the Goth, to provide a broader context on Christianity in this region. Finally, the paper will try to evaluate the way in which the Latin language and culture influenced the spread and perception of Christianity among the native population. Our approach will combine the historiographical methods with the archaeological and philological ones in order to provide a more complex and nuanced picture of the treated subject.
