Abstract:

Eugene O’Neill (1888–1953), founder and reformer of American drama, is the author of 49 accomplished works, including one-act plays, tragedies and a comedy (Bogard “Introduction” vii). One of his one-act plays and two tragedies were published in Bulgarian, the last one in 1971. The (re)translations of nine more works remained unpublished, the majority of which intended mostly for stage performance. The aim of the present study is to systematize the Bulgarian translations of works by Eugene O’Neill in their chronological order, and to pay tribute to the translators who contributed significantly to the process of his reception in Bulgaria. This is exemplified by selected texts that best reveal the main themes and motifs in O’Neill’s work. Their setting on stage is considered only when it managed to explain certain characteristic features of the translations.
