Grammatical Adaptation of Anglicisms in Bulgarian in EU Legal Acts

Abstract:

The study explores the status of Anglicisms in the current state of the Bulgarian language in view of their usage in EU regulations. The emphasis is laid on the internationalisation of Bulgarian in the age of globalisation with English as the lingua franca functioning as a donor of loanwords in its contact with other languages. The research highlights the undetermined status of the Anglicisms that have Bulgarian counterparts, the use of which is rather a matter of personal preference. The analysis focuses mainly on the English loanwords that have partial or no Bulgarian counterparts and are currently in the process of morphological adaptation and assimilation. Such adaptation is most complex with nouns, as there is no category of gender in the Modern English language. When borrowed into Bulgarian, English nominal loanwords undergo a process of word formation and grammatical adaptation to ensure their functionality in the recipient language. The major findings of the research point to the current trends in conveying grammatical meaning and grammatical adaptation of Anglicisms in Bulgarian when employed in EU legal acts.
