Abstract:

Founded in Vienna in 1961, the Austrian Society for Literature (ÖGfL) promoted trans-bloc cultural exchange between ‘East’ and ‘West’ during the Cold War. This paper focuses on Austrian-Bulgarian literary relations fostered by the Society between 1961 and 1990. It consists of two parts: (I) an examination of the advantages and limitations of a non-scholarly archive, and (II) an analysis of selected archival examples with regard to Bulgarian-Austrian literary relations.

Keywords:

Cold War, cultural exchange, Austrian-Bulgarian relations, archive, book programs, turning point 1989
