Abstract:
Realistic literature arises as a reaction to romanticism and the altered reality. During the era of Slovak romanticism, dominant motifs are flight, eagle, falcon, hero and others, whereas canonized concepts such as tree, root and scions, dry branch, lilies, wild flower, village, home, wandering predominate in the prose of literary realism. The metaphorical romantic model is replaced by the metonymic principle of realism, and the main tactic of the realist writer is to conceal the contact between reality and literary fiction, to integrate the anonymous author into the artistic picture they depict. In a situation of hesitant identity, realist authors turn to the intimate world of the patriarchal family, to its morality and traditions, in order to paint the Slovak cultural society.
