Abstract:

The image of the hero in the Armenian epic tradition is marked by remarkable complexity, multi-dimensionality and dynamism. He embodies the positive beginning and personifies a deeply humanistic and idealized embodiment of positive values, serving as vessels for the collective aspirations and hopes of the Armenian people. Heroic characters in Armenian epic literature are bright bearers of the moral and aesthetic ideals of Armenian culture. They are characterized by courage, physical strength, and moral, determination and willingness to sacrifice oneself. Concurrently, they exhibit profound wisdom, unyielding devotion, and an exceptional capacity for leadership and inspiration. This study focuses on key male heroic archetypes within the Armenian epic tradition, emphasizing their diverse representations – whether as protectors, warriors, leaders or kings – and exploring their contribution to shaping the cultural ideal of heroism.
