Abstract:

The products of audiovisual translation (AVT) have long been part of our everyday lives, be it in advertising or in the film industry. Contrary to expectations, however, theory has not yet built a bridge to practice. The subject of this article, the synchronies of AVT, has so far received little attention. Individual researchers (Whitman-Linsen 1992, Chaume 2012, Matamala 2020) have placed particular emphasis on this, considering it to be important in defining criteria with a predominantly prescriptive character to achieve optimal quality of the target product. Since the types of synchronicities are a trademark of AVT and at the same time a touchstone for the quality of audiovisual translations regardless of the modality (dubbing or voiceover), they can simultaneously bear responsibility for the perception of the final product and for the impact on the audience. Against this background, the aim of this article is to provide an overview of the essential synchronicities of AVT and their peculiarities based on empirical data, from which objective and reliable criteria for evaluating the quality of AVT can be derived.
