Abstract:

This paper traces the development of critical opinions on the novel “Under the Yoke” in the first decade after its publication. Criticism of the work has gone through both positive as well as many negative evaluations. The study classifies not only the various imperfections but also the positive aspects of the novel according to the aesthetic understandings of the time. The conducted review shows that the overwhelming negative opinions stem from aesthetic and ideological prejudices concerning the genre of a “novel” in Vazov’s time. Newer research on the novel has refuted a number of misconceptions of the then critics.
