Резюме:
Towards the end of the 20th century, educational systems around the world were focused on teaching subject-specific content and on the knowledge acquisition by students. The dynamics of the 21st-century digital society has pushed educational experts to now focus on students' skills for successful realization in life and profession. Among the wide range of skills, the ones that stand out are learning and innovation skills, digital literacy, and career skills. These capabilities correspond to those developed through STEM. Therefore, the article substantiates the need for STEM education to develop further 21st-century competencies and skills. STEM skills are defined through the process of integrated STEM education. The set of STEM skills is revealed as a correlation between fundamental hard skills acquired from the four STEM domains and soft/social, transferable skills. An original model of a STEM-integrated learning environment for STEM skills has been developed in the context of 21st-century competencies and skills. The analyses and summaries in the paper highlight the connection between the latter and the STEM capabilities.
