Psychophysical Health as an Indicator of Quality of Life in the Perception of Seniors

This article addresses the issue of quality of life as perceived by seniors from a current perspective and the perspective they will experience in five years. Statistically, the variables indicating quality of life and gender are described. The objective of the study is to verify the following hypotheses: It has been assumed that senior men assess their quality of life higher than senior women. However, the women surveyed perceived their lives in five years more positively than the men in the survey. It was also assumed that the respondents assessed their current quality of life higher than the quality they will experience in five years. Method:The study used selected statements from the original Functioning in Old Age Questionnaire (KFS). Respondents could rate these items on a five-point scale. For the purposes of this article, a total of 82 individuals from the Słupsk County were surveyed: men (N=46) and women (N=36). Descriptive statistics for the studied variables and their distribution were calculated and a nonparametric test was used. Results:Based on the analysis, it was determined that the ages of the studied women and men did not differ statistically (p = .39). Men’s assessment of quality of life (current and future) showed no significant differences (p = .27), while women assessed the present and future significantly differently (p = .008). At the same time, there was a significant difference between the women and men in their assessment of quality of life in the present (p = .01) and in the future (p = .0003). Conclusions: Senior men rated their current and future quality of life moderately. Senior women, on the other hand, perceived their quality of life (present and future) as low. It can be concluded that late adulthood brings a marked decline in quality of life with it, which men find easier to accept.
