In recent years, the extraordinary interest in the study of sign language as a second language (L2) has inspired research with a new focus on achievements. Visual and spoken languages have different modes of expression, which is a reference to the existence of a great potential for expanding the understanding of the mechanisms and processes involved in L2 acquisition. The transfer of existing knowledge in the field of learning a foreign verbal language to visual languages can be a source of new insights regarding the generalization of theories and paradigms in this research field. In contrast, the in-depth study of sign languages as equivalent to spoken languages has the power to form a new/different view of the latter. The proposed scientific text, representing a theoretical study of the problem of studying sign languages (including the Bulgarian Sign Language— BGSL) as L2, contains data extracted from national and foreign periodicals. The systematized analysis incorporates several basic cores of representation: modality, transfer, iconicity, sign space, as well as the accompanying challenges that arise when operating with the new sign code.
