Резюме:
The paper examines the type of the kinship system and the size and structure of the family in Western Europe in 5th – 9th cc. The author reaches the conclusion that the Germanic kinship structure was patrilinear and the ties of blood still played an important role in the life of the individual. But at the same time the State and the Church were gradually taking away the important economic, social and political functions from the family. The period from the 5th till the 9th c. was a time of a gradual evolution of the family in Western Europe in the direction of the small family, including only the parents and their children.
