Резюме:
The question – which is not new – of the essence of Slavia Orthodoxa is provoked by Arnold Toynbee‘s delineation of civilizations and the continual attempts to theoretically distinguish between civilization and culture. The author seeks to answer the question by sharing Vyacheslav Stepin‘s view of the defining role of deep social structures for language as the beginning of the complex supra-biological programs of culture. Language is seen as a set of three layers of culture marked by worldview universals within shifting conceptual spheres. Their concrete realization through the reflective cultural deep surface structures is evidence of cultural memory, elevated – thanks to the Bulgarian language policy until the end of the 14th century – to a cultural identity of the Slavia Orthodoxa community – the Eastern Orthodox Slavic civilization.
