The article examines the origin, word-building structure and semantics of 57 surnames based on names of persons according to professional occupation. Conclusions that differ from those of Ilchev’s (1969) are arrived at, and partial amendments to Ilchev’s inferences are proposed for another 3. The remaining 38 surnames are investigated for the first time. All 57 surnames analysed here form 2 groups in regard to their linguistic provenance: 1) in the stems of 14 surnames, 8 inherited personal names are found according to occupation pertaining to 7 semantic groups; 2) in the stems of the remaining 43 surnames, 19 borrowings (pertaining to 18 semantic groups) are established: 12 of them are of Turkish origin and the rest are considered borrowed from Romanian and partially – via Romanian – from German and Hungarian. With the exception of 4 of them, the supposed borrowings are not attested as common nouns in Bulgarian language and its dialects.
