Radical transformations in social, political, economic and cultural life in Bulgaria and Romania after the end of 1989 lead to a considerable linguistic, mostly lexical change, including not only neologisation processes, but also modifications inside their lexicons. The paper approaches these internal translocations, focusing on the mobility between the active and passive vocabularies – abandonment of terms that used to be current in socialism, renewal of some older lexical items or replacement of lexemes from the preceding period by others. The paper seeks to establish how two genetically unrelated languages react and change in the same extra-linguistic context, having in mind the parallel developments in both countries in the past thirty years.
