Abstract:
The article dwells on the Polish emigrant writer Gustaw Herling-Grudziński’s secret diary, which he kept from 1957 to 1958. It came out in 2018, 18 years after his death, published by his daughter Marta Herling and one of his leading critics and companions Włodzimierz Bolecki. The paper considers the following problematic aspects: the similarities and differences between the secret diary and the published “Diary Written at Night”, the enigma of the creative relocation of experienced trauma; emigration, dreams and dreaming; the direction of the daughter’s discourse set by her comments accompanying the edition.
