Abstract:
This paper focuses on footnotes, which are seen as an opportunity to break out of anonymity and eliminate the translator’s invisibility, and as a text with relative autonomy. Although often criticised as elements illustrating the translator’s inability to handle the translation of the original text, footnotes can be transformed by the experienced translator into relatively independent textual units and encourage the reader to draw broader conclusions and interpretations, i.e. to bring a kind of added value to the translated work.
