Резюме:

Heraldry and road signs are two seemingly incompatible genres of visual communication. The former originates from a world of chivalry, war, and feudalism, serving as inspiration for tales of bravery and romance. The latter arises from the needs of the modern world, a world of fast machines, impatient people, and limited time. However, upon closer examination, we can notice many similarities. This study sets forth a theory and raises questions about the place of these two arts. Two visual languages that, when analyzed, reveal striking parallels. Could one have influenced the creation of the other? The rules of heraldry have influenced many areas of contemporary visual communication one of which is road signage. Although they serve different functions, both systems employ a number of shared visual principles, which will be examined in the present report.
