Gypsies in Dubravka Ugrešić’s Fiction and Essays

This article analyses minority metaphors in Dubravka Ugrešić’s fiction and essays, with a primary focus on the emergence and evolution of the Gypsy figure in the works created during her emigration. From American Fictionary (Američki fikcionar, 1993) to her latest essay collections, the Gypsy is closely linked to her self-portrayal as a writer in exile, whose true homeland transcends geographical and ethnic boundaries, existing solely in aesthetic terms. Notwithstanding the focus on aesthetics, Ugrešić approaches literature through a political lens. In this context, the Gypsy in her fiction and essays serves as a vehicle for critiquing the excesses of nationalism during the conflicts that led to the disintegration of the former Yugoslav state.
