Резюме:
The article presents peculiarities of Georgia’s pre-election campaigns, particularly the self-representation of presidential candidates and the linguistic devices they employ to succeed in the elections. This critical undertaking is based on textual analysis of the pre-election candidates’ speeches. The article’s main theoretical framework is shaped by the conclusions of research on political discourse by P.A. Chilton, T.V. Dijk, N. Fairclough, and Christine Schaffner. For this article, we employed the method of content analysis and quantitative (content) analysis, in particular, to analyse the political texts of three presidential candidates – Zviad Gamsakhurdia (1991), Eduard Shevardnadze (1995), and Mikheil Saakashvili (2004), produced in the run-up to the elections and published in the newspapers sak’art’velos respublika (The Republic of Georgia) and “24 saat’i” (24 Hours).
