The subject of the article are the names of the states that are presented as a separate group of choronyms and called etatonyms (the term comes from the French. état ‘a state’), The author discusses the European and Polish etatonyms as on the one hand depending on development of political and social vision and idea of the state, and on the other hand as related to typical human perception and experience of the world. The result of the evolution of political thought is the cannon of the European names of states in which occur well-known components, such as empire, kingdom, crown, republic, and other. The specificity of human perception makes a man trying to constitute the appropriate reality where his country has got the best position. The article shows examples of enlarging or diminishing the states (their rank and position) with use of various linguistic means. In the final part of the article the Polish contemporary expressions that are not the official proper names of the Polish state but the creations of everyday language are presented in order to recognize the prototypical form and structure of etatonym and the stereotypical characteristic of some of its types.
